117. How Do I Rename The Recycle Bin

Before proceeding to edit the Registry be sure to make a backup copy. (see 662. How do I backup the Registry in Windows XP ).

Click the Start button.
From the Start menu click Run.
In the Run dialogue box type: regedit.
Click the + sign next to the registry hive HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.
A very long list will now appear.
Scroll down until you come CLSID and click the + sign next to that.
Another long list of numbers will appear.
Look for the following key: 645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E. You may find it easier to copy this number and then use the registry Find option to locate the relevant key.
Once you have locate this key click the + sign next to this key to expand the menu.
From the expanded menu click on the ShellFolder folder.
In the right hand pane look for the word Attributes.
Right click on Attributes and change the attribute data value from: 40 01 00 20 to 70 01 00 20 and press OK (Please Note: This attribute number is for Windows XP users only. For other versions change the attributes to 50 01 00 20).
Now close the registry editor.
The next step is to go to the desktop and Right click on the Recycle Bin icon and, from the drop down menu, click on Explore.
Windows explorer will now open with the Recycle Bin highlighted.
Now click the File option on the main Windows Explorer toolbar and select Rename.
You can now rename the recycle bin.
