This problem has been voiced in the many newsgroups
time and time again. It can be difficult to answer, simply because one is never
sure whether the CD in question is a genuine Microsoft product or one of the
many pirated versions. What can be safely said is that, if you are in possession
of a pirated copy of Windows XP then don't expect Microsoft to be of any help.
However, should you have lost, broken or damaged a genuine Microsoft Windows XP
copy you can proceed as follows:
1/ First and most importantly you must be in possession
of an official receipt for the product in question or other proof of purchase.
2/ If you are in the USA or Canada you should contact
The Supplemental and replacement Parts team at Microsoft
3/ If you live outside of the USA or Canada you will
need to contact the local Microsoft subsidiary in your country. The relevant
telephone contact details can usually be found on your local Microsoft web page.
4/ Explain either by telephone, in a letter or email
that your CD is lost, broken or damaged and make sure you either send a the
original proof of purchase or else be prepared to do so.
5/ In some cases a charge may be levied for replacement
and you may be asked to pay shipping and handling costs. The Microsoft
representative who eventually contacts you will be able to advise you on any
charges.
