98. How Do I Bypass The Windows Log On Screen

Important Question! Can your PC Run Faster?

When you install the Windows .NET framework it can be a shock when you next boot up your machine to find that you are presented with a log in screen that requires a password before you can enter your system. To bypass this screen and return to the normal boot mode do the following.

To bypass the windows log on screen do the following.

Method One

1/ Click the Start button.

2/ On the Start menu click Run.

3/ In the Run dialogue box type ‘control userpasswords2’ (without the quotes) and press OK.

4/ The User Account properties window will now appear.

5/ Remove the check mark from the ‘users must enter a user name and password to use this computer’ option.

6/ Click Apply.

7/ A new window will now appear.

8/ In this Window enter the Name and Password you wish to be used to automatically log on to your pc.

9/ Once you have entered the details click OK to exit the new user name and password dialogue window and then click OK on the User Properties box.

10/ Now go to Control Panel and click on the User Accounts icon.

11/ In the user Accounts properties window click the Change the way Users Log on or off option.

12/ Uncheck the following two options:

  1.  Use the Welcome Screen.
  2.  Use fast User switching.

13/ Finally click the Apply Options button and then close down the User Account window.

Method Two

The second method is probably the easiest because everything is done for you. To begin download the free application TweakUI http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

You will find the application on the right hand side of the web page under the name of TweakUI.exe.

Once you have downloaded TweakUI install it on your PC and then run the program. Once the program opens proceed as follows:

1/ In TweakUI's main window, Click the + (Plus) sign next to the Logon option.

2/ From the drop down list, Click on Autologon.

3/ In the Autologon window place a Tick in the box labelled 'Log on automatically at system startup'.

4/ Ensure that the correct logon account is selected and then Click OK.

5/ Now Restart your PC and you should boot straight to your desktop.
